we bring to you To Books and Beyond-Literacy without Limits, the theme of the 2013 Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books to be held Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22 on the UW-Waukesha campus.

Community volunteers have been hard at work for months to make the 4th annual community event a celebration of literacy and the arts, where local and national authors and readers of all ages come together to enjoy presentations, performances, creativity, and conversation.  Some specific goals we hope to achieve:

  • Celebrate literature and the arts
  • Support authors with community exposure
  • Attract youth to the potential of the written word
  • Link reading to current culture and future technology
  • Provide intergenerational learning in an affordable (free), public event
  • Increase awareness of UW-Waukesha as a learning resource

Partnering with us in this venture is the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) who will be offering panel discussions on a wide range of topics such as “Short Fiction-Science Fiction” and “Zombies.” Additionally there will be performances by Kohl’s Wild Theater and appearances by Dakota the Owl. The winners of the middle and high school essay contest will read their entries during the Festival and receive their awards. Windy Hill Brass will give a concert on Sunday.

We are very excited about the Festival this year. The full program has been posted.

We need your help to continue offering this community-wide event for free. Even with the hard work and enthusiasm of our volunteers, financial support is needed to help defray costs. Give to the Festival and stand up for literacy! Any amount is welcomed. Donating is easy as it can be done online or with a pledge form.

To become a 2013 Friend of the Festival, a basic membership is $30 for an individual and $50 for a household.  Membership includes an invitation to the Authors’ Reception on Friday, Sept. 20, a Festival book bag and/or bookmark, subscription to the Festival E-Newsletter and other announcements about Festival events.

The Festival is being presented by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel with sponsorship from the Mihi Cura Futuri Fund of the Waukesha County Community Foundation, Century Fence Company, the Wisconsin Energy Foundation, American Transmission Company, UW-Waukesha Lectures and Fine Arts Committee, Wisconsin Public Radio, and Martha Merrell’s Books and Café and Cuddles. Additional support is provided by individuals, businesses and organizations.
